@Noise:
S. 231 GRW
The most common source of noise is distance from
your target, but there are other causes, as listed on the
table. There are also spam zones and static zones to
deal with. A spam zone has so much traffic (often commercial
in nature) that everything gets processed slower.
Static zones are areas with either a lot of electromagnetic
blockage (like an underground tunnel, labyrinth
of sewers, or ruins of a steel office building) or far away
from civilization (the middle of a desert, the north pole,
adrift in the Pacific, etc.).To figure out how noise is affecting you, start with
the noise level from real-world distance to your target
and add the noise level from any other applicable situations,
then subtract any noise reduction you are using.
Any positive noise level you have left over is a negativedice pool modifier to your actions. Noise never applies
to defense or resistance tests.

WIRELESS BONUSES
Because nearly every piece of gear and ’ware is wireless
capable, it means nearly every piece of gear and cyberware
benefits dramatically from being “meshed” into your
wireless personal area network and the Matrix as a whole.
When an item has additional functionality when connected
to the Matrix, it’s described under the “Wireless”
entry in the item’s description. This functionality only
applies when the device has access to the Matrix, which
is most of the time unless your gamemaster says otherwise,
like if you’ve entered a wireless static zone.If there is a Noise Rating from a situation that is greater
than the item’s Device Rating, not including distance,
the item temporarily loses its wireless functionality (see
Noise, p. 230).
These benefits only apply when the item’s wireless
mode is on. Your Ares Alpha can’t auto-adjust for the
wind direction and speed if it can’t download local upto-
the-second weather conditions, and your Eurocar
Westwind 3000 doesn’t know the status of the next
three traffic lights if it’s not connected to GridGuide.
S. 170
Noise is unwanted data or wireless
signals that make using the Matrix slower or more difficult.
Noise follows guidelines according to distance
and local traffic, but it also can be a story tool for the
gamemaster to increase or lower the difficulty of a specific
scenario as he sees fit. If a run requires access to a
specific grid, noise might necessitate the shadowrunners
breaking into a secure building to escape a spam
zone in order to access the files they need from a corporate
host.
S. 59
While having the identical effect in the rules, the sources and
methods of noise in the world are vastly different things. Static
zones have little to no wireless connections, making them areas that
limit the amount of connections, and bandwidth, available for the
Matrix. Spam zones are the exact opposite, having multiple levels
of access, but overburdened by so much traffic that bandwidth is
overwhelmed and unable to flow properly. Dead zones, of course,
are where nothing is happening, Matrix-wise.
These zones affect the shadowrunners in different ways.
Dead zones annoy them with the inability to get even a single
bar of connection, while spam zones annoy them by constantly
flooding every bit of their perception with advertisements for
consumeristic garbage. Creating or enhancing those zones is
fairly subtle—after all, if you’re not expecting the best wireless
service in an area, do you complain about how it really isn’t
working one day? Or perhaps people just shrug because the spam
is particularly thick today—maybe some great new cat video got
posted that everyone needs to watch.
If someone uses the wrong type of Noise in an area, however,
things get quite less subtle very, very quickly. After all, if there are
no people in the area who can see into augmented reality, why
would a spam zone suddenly pop up that can be seen by anyone
with even the most basic commlink? In the other direction, a
spam zone being flooded with static and a lack of ability to get out
those advertisements is going to slot off a corporation or two—
they don’t like people messing with revenue-generators. It’s a
basic rule of shadowrunning—don’t do things that call too much
attention to yourself.
